The Bull public House Blackmore – update 1/3/13

I have had so many customers coming into Megarrys Teashop asking when the BULL public house will reopen, and now Meg has posted a comment asking what is happening.     The short answer is who knows?

However here goes:-            The Bull was sold some time ago , and we were all told that it would reopen as a pub. However the new owner has refurbished the upstairs , making two flats. The downstairs has been stripped out as can be seen on the original sales details, but so far has not been reinstated as a bar, in fact the old bar has been removed as has a stud wall between the two levels of the old lounge bar.

A couple of days ago I met a very pleasant young couple who have apparently rented one of the flats and have a years lease. The good thing is that the lovely old listed building will at least be kept warm this winter. Nothing causes deterioration to old buildings more quickly than being left empty and cold, and recently the owner has been away for much of the time.

Now the plot thickens……In September together with several other interested neighbours I attended a parish Council meeting where the owners representative  announced that they will be applying for planning permission to erect three dwellings in the Bull Garden with access(I think) into Blacksmiths Alley. The intention seems to be to apply for planning consent to demolish outbuildings including the existing kitchen. The stated intention was to investigate the possibility of putting the kitchen inside the Pub. Apparently however this could be difficult since it is a listed building and there could be a problem with extractor fans??? It was also the stated intention to reopen the pub with a smaller beer garden. Now the Parish council minutes have been posted on their website, where a more detailed account of the discussions can be read . Go to

Please note Blackmore is written with a lower case b and it appears to be case sensitive.

I read out the petition which has been signed by over two hundred neighbours, villagers and ex customers of the Bull, which states that……

“WE THE UNDERSIGNED WOULD OBJECT IN THE STRONGEST POSSIBLE TERMS TO ANT ATTEMPT TO CHANGE THE USE OF THESE PREMISES FROM COMMERCIAL LICENSED TO PRIVATE USAGE.WE FEEL IT SHOULD REMAIN A PUB/RESTUARANT OR EVEN A LICENSED HOTEL. THE BULL HAS BEEN A HOSTELRY SINCE THE 14TH CENTURY AND UNTIL RECENTLY WAS THE HEART AND SOUL OF THE VILLAGE? IT IS A GRADE 2LISTED BUILDING IN THE CENTRE OF THE BLACKMORE CONSERVATION AREA WE FEEL THAT NOTHING MORE SHOULD BE DONE TO ALTER THE BUILDING OR GROUNDS” These signatures, have been collected by concerned neighbours and villagers, and have been added by people who came into Megarrys Antiques and Teashop asking what is happening to the Bull.

We have been advised that concerned people should WRITE INDIVIDUALLY to the Brentwood Borough Council expressing their concerns either by email or snail mail, as this will have more effect than a petition alone.

I did hear yesterday that the selling price has been reduced, but am not sure by how much.. It would be wonderful if the village could club together to buy it but I suspect the price will always be too high for that!!!!

UPDATE 1/3/13 A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO THERE WAS A PUBLIC PROTEST MEETING OUTSIDE THE BULL ATTENDED BY OVER 60 PEOPLE. THEY HAD A BANNER SAYING SAVE THE BULL! AND THE BRENTWOOD GAZETTE TOOK PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH WERE IN THE LOCAL PAPER.HOPEFULLY THIS OPEN SUPPORT FOR THE BULL WILL PERSUADE SOMEBODY TO BUY IT OR THE PRESENT OWNER TO RE OPEN IT. The people attending the meeting were only the tip of the iceberg there are now over three hundred signatures on the petition and I am being asked daily when it will reopen ?….I wish I knew!!
